But often a specific project gives us a chance to build amazing, multi-disciplinary, project-specific, design teams.
In that case, we work with a wide array of visionary creatives. They are joyful and passionate. They are bold in their thinking and pragmatic in getting things done. They push our own thinking. They are educators, designers, architects, storytellers, planners, and experts in many fields. And they let us bring together incredible just-in-time teams as needed.
Christian Long, Ed.M. // Founding Partner
Big Picture: Christian is an educator, school planner, plausible-futures seeker, and passionate advocate for innovative learning communities, having spent the last 20 years teaching, coaching, leading experiential education programs, and designing schools.
Education: Christian holds a Masters degree in Education with a concentration in school design from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Bachelor’s degree in English with a certificate of secondary education from Indiana University (Bloomington). Additionally, he was a Klingenstein Summer Fellow for emerging school leaders at Teachers College, Columbia University and completed the summer-long Design Discovery architecture institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Speaking: As a speaker, he regularly delivers keynotes on the relationship between design and the future of learning at events around the world. Additionally, he has also spoken at TEDxIndianapolis, TEDxGreenville, TEDxOverlake, and TEDxFurmanU(niversity.).
Previously: Previously, Christian co-founded the internationally regarded Wonder, By Design studio; co-lead The Third Teacher+ studio within the global Education practice of CannonDesign; founded Prototype Design Lab to empower young creatives and educators to solve real problems in the real world in real time; founded Be Playful Design, a multidisciplinary design studio focused on creating agile 21st Century schools; and founded the TEDxClassroomProject, the only TEDx license granted in the world for a non-event.
Future Daydream: Retire as a summer camp counselor.
Karla JB Long, Ed.M. // Founding Partner
Big Picture: For more than 20 years, Karla has been a widely celebrated school leader and Middle School Director, passionate classroom educator, professional mentor, and advocate for the power of experiential education on learners of all ages and communities of all types.
Education: Karla completed a Masters degree in Education with a concentration in school administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Smith College.
Experiential Education: Beyond academic credentials, Karla has been Wilderness First Responder certified and High Ropes Leader certified, co-led a wide array of experiential education trips including an Outward Bound trip to Costa Rica, developed an interrelated outdoor classroom and low ropes course, and championed service-based learning projects and advisory programs at a variety of independent schools around the United States.
Previously: Previously, Karla was the Head of Middle School at Columbus Academy (Columbus, OH) and Trinity Valley School (Fort Worth, TX); Middle School Dean of Students at Bryn Mawr School for Girls (Baltimore, MD); Assistant Director of Middle School at Dana Hall School (Wellesley, MA); and History / Language Arts teacher at Keith Country Day School (Rockford, IL). Prior to becoming a career-long educator, she was a Financial Analyst with Solomon Brothers.
Future Daydream: Open up a wine-n-cheese mystery book store.
